The PlayStation 5 is a powerful machine, but like any piece of tech, small issues can pop up. The good news is most problems people experience aren’t serious and can be fixed at home without special tools.

This guide is written for beginners, so you can work through issues step by step without stress.

Problem 1: PS5 Overheating

If your console sounds louder than usual, feels very hot, shows a temperature warning, or shuts down mid-game, overheating is likely.

This usually happens because of dust buildup or poor airflow. In warmer South African climates, this can happen faster.

Start by turning the PS5 off completely and unplugging it. Move it to an open area where air can flow around it - not inside a tight cabinet or against a wall. Remove the outer panels and gently clean vents using compressed air. Never use a vacuum directly inside.

Keeping the console clean and well-ventilated solves most overheating issues.

Problem 2: Controller Stick Drift

Stick drift affects the DualSense Wireless Controller when your character moves without you touching the stick.

First, reset the controller using the small reset button on the back. You can also blow compressed air around the base of the thumbstick to remove dust. In some games, adjusting “dead zone” settings can reduce the effect.

If drift continues, the internal sensor may be worn out. At that point, repair or replacement is needed.

Problem 3: PS5 Not Connecting to Wi-Fi

If your PS5 won’t connect, disconnects often, or has slow downloads, the issue is usually the network, not the console.

Restart your router and PS5. Move the console closer to the router if possible. Use the 5 GHz network instead of 2.4 GHz for faster speeds. If problems continue, try a wired LAN cable for the most stable connection.

Also check that your PS5 system software is up to date.

Problem 4: Games Freezing or Crashing

Games that freeze, stutter, or close suddenly are often caused by corrupted files or system glitches.

Restart the console first. Make sure the game and system software are updated. If the issue keeps happening, start the PS5 in Safe Mode and choose “Rebuild Database.” This reorganizes system files and often fixes crashes.

Also make sure your storage isn’t completely full.

Problem 5: PS5 Not Turning On

If nothing happens when you press the power button, check the basics first.

Make sure the power cable is secure on both ends. Try a different wall socket. Unplug the PS5 for 30 seconds and try again.

If there’s still no power light, the power supply may need professional repair.

When to stop troubleshooting

If your console:

  • Shuts down repeatedly

  • Shows the same error codes

  • Has liquid or physical damage

It’s best to contact an authorised repair service.

Final thoughts

Most PS5 issues come down to dust, overheating, software glitches, or network problems - not major hardware failure. Regular cleaning, good airflow, and keeping software updated go a long way.
