Sony’s latest PS5 system software update is rolling out globally from April 24, introducing two highly requested features — immersive Audio Focus controls and the return of classic PlayStation UI designs, now called Appearances.
🔊 Audio Focus: Hear What Matters Most
The new Audio Focus feature enhances audio clarity during gameplay, letting you amplify specific sound ranges like character voices, footsteps, or background effects — especially useful with wired headphones for late-night or competitive play.
You can choose from four preset options:
-
Boost Low Pitch – for deep sounds like engines or explosions
-
Boost Voices – for dialogue and party chat clarity
-
Boost High Pitch – for high-frequency details like footsteps
-
Boost Quiet Sounds – for soft ambient audio and subtle effects
Each preset has three intensity levels (Weak, Medium, Strong), and you can adjust the left/right balance independently. Find it via Settings > Sound > Volume > Audio Focus
or the Control Center.
🎧 Note: This feature is only supported through USB or analog jack headphones — not HDMI setups.
🎮 Classic Console Designs Return as “Appearances”
Back by popular demand, the UI designs inspired by PS1, PS2, PS3, and PS4 are making a permanent comeback. These nostalgic themes give your PS5 a retro twist, complete with visual throwbacks and, in some cases, classic start-up animations.
You can switch appearances by going to:Settings > System > Appearance > Appearance and Sound
.
⏳ Staggered Rollout Begins Today
Sony is launching the update in phases. Today, 5% of global users — selected at random — will receive the update automatically.
If you’re not part of the initial wave, you don’t have to wait: once the rollout begins, you can manually install the update by heading to your PS5 system settings and selecting System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings.
Whether you're fine-tuning your soundscape or throwing it back with a PS2-inspired UI, this update is a clear win for accessibility and personalisation.
